Heartsong Sound School is a 501[c](3) non-profit group on a mission to bring the gift of music to children who otherwise would be unable to afford it, by giving musical instruments and lessons free of charge to underprivileged kids 18 years of age and under.
Heartsong hopes to bring hope to the hopeless through the power of music. By teaching music to kids living on the street who have almost nothing to call their own, we can show them that they do have a voice, and we can help them find it. Heartsong will travel around the Country in a converted school bus (powered by Biodeisel) spending a two weeks or so in each town, and then moving on to the next. It is in this way, We feel we can do the most good. We will be going directly to the source. By staying on the road we can have a bigger, more wide-reaching impact.
Heartsong will be hosting various workshops, drum circles, jam sessions, performances, and private instruction. All activities will be free and open to the public, however, only kids 18 and under will be given the free instruments to keep.
Upon arriving into town, Heartsong will head to the park where the kids hang out. We will provide them with a free meal, and talk to them and get to know them a little, and them us. We will let them know where we will be for the next two weeks, as directed by local police and commerce departments, and invite them all to come and learn from us. During this time we will also be posting fliers around town, and contacting local newspapers, radio and television stations to let the people who live in that town know who we are, what we do, and where they can go if they have an instrument they would like to donate to our efforts. Our tenure in each town will be culminated by performance featuring the local kids who have been our students.
There are numerous projects like this one that operate within public schools, but Heartsong is going after the kids not in school. The so-called "street kids". These are kids who dropped out, ran away from home, and won't go within 100 ft of a "real school". Our bus will be a non-threatening, relaxed atmosphere, devoid of the preaching, and ordering that caused these kids to run in the first place. At Heartsong it's just about music. Also, the mobile aspect of Heartsong allows us to go directly to the kids who need us, and not through intermediary, roundabout, red tape entangled sources.
The bus serves as both transport, and a base of operations. It has a fully functional kitchen and living quarters for the crew. It also houses a built-in PA system that is completely plug and play. The PA is powered by solar panels, and has a digital recorder, so all performances, drum circles, etc. can be preserved and shared, either through Internet down loads, or on CDs. Also, the bus has a biodiesel processor mounted to the back for making fuel out of used vegetable oil that is safe, renewable, and has less emissions than petroleum based fuels.
By putting a musical instrument into the hands of a kid who has nothing, you give that child a voice. You give them power and hope, a reason to live, and something to look forward to: learning that new chord, scale, song. Getting all that is inside, tearing them apart, out. That's what music is for many people: an outlet of expression. And the streets will be filled with sweet, sweet music. Heartsong Sound School "Changing The World, Three Chords At A Time"
