Energy Village Proposal

We are a collective of people, organizations, businesses, projects and dreams.  There are many people in Eugene who are working on very creative and innovative projects including sustainablility and green business, art, music, dance, yoga, fitness, nutrition, programs for teens and children, spiritual programs, interfaith community, locally crafted goods, permaculture, restaurant and tea house ideas, and the list goes on.  We have been working on networking between these innovative people and businesses because it seems that although there are a lot of great things happening in Eugene, everything is kind of dispersed.  This could be because we have so many vacant buildings downtown.  We have all agreed that we need a center.  This center would house all of these already existing projects and business, and also create new programs.  We feel that downtown is the likely place to have this center because it is a centralized location with lots of available space.  This center would act as a hub of connection of resources to people.  There would be someone sitting at the front desk who would be the expert of what’s happening in Eugene.  This would be the place where tourists would go to find out what’s happening in Eugene and how they can get involved.

We see this center as necessary for many reasons.  One of them being that many people are working on the same or similar projects and do not know about each other.  This would be a place for collaboration, helping to bring people together to work on common goals.  This center would help to bring more vibrancy downtown as well as solve some existing issues within the community and downtown.

As a group of engaged citizens, we have been having a conversation about to some major issues within our community and downtown.  Through looking at the issues we have developed solutions to these issues that not only solve a wide array of problems, they also create fun and new ways for everyone in the community to engage in our growingly vibrant downtown.

Some issues that need to be addressed in thinking about the success of downtown and our community at large are the teens, local businesses, drugs, violence prevention, parents, jobs, college students, veterans, non-profit organizations, the environment, children and elderly.

Many people within the community have complained  about the teens downtown or had issues with them.  They are intimidating to many people because they dress differently and have piercings and tattoos.  This is to be expected because young people have always been different from the generations before them.  The issue is that these teens have no safe place to go.  If you are a young person and you hang out downtown for 5 or 10 minutes you will most likely get offers for drugs or alcohol, I am speaking from experience.  Many of these youth are homeless, runaway, live in homes with drugs and alcohol abuse and domestic violence, or are just looking for something to do.  There are very few place for them to go, so they hang out on the streets.  One of the only places to go downtown that was youth friendly was Café Paradiso, which has now been turned into a bar.  There needs to be a safe, fun, cool place downtown for young people to hang out that is drug free, supervised and there is no need to buy something to be there or use the bathroom.

We purpose to have a teen center within this building that would run creative programs for youth.  There are many programs that have been proven effective at helping youth build self-esteem, keep them off drugs and alcohol, and empower them to be leaders of the future.  One such program is Hip Hop Hope which is a Power of Hope Camp.  Power of Hope is an orgainization

There are several local businesses within the community that are struggling where there, (i.e. Better Yet, Mama Roses’s Naturals…)  business feature local hand made products that would be highly successful if located downtown.  Especailly when tourists come and would like to buy something that is uniquely Eugene.

Many college students graduate from and then leave the city because they cannot find a job within the community

Susanna:  This is what a conjured up as a brief description of what we are doing.  What I am working on above is more in depth.  I am not attached to any of it, add, delete, do whatever! Xoxoxox

We are a collective of people and businesses that want to have a building downtown.  These are some examples of what would be in the building:

•    Teen Center
•    Interfaith Center
•    Dance and Yoga Studio
•    Local businesses (i.e. Mama Roses Naturals, Better Yet)
•    Child care and after school programs
•    Job opportunities for all people as well as jobs for college graduates
•    Veteran Support Center
•    Office space for Non-profits
•    Resource center
•    Tourist info desk
•    Recording Studio
•    Band practice rooms
•    Creative and cozy conference rooms
•    Organic vegetarian restaurant
•    Permaculture and Sustainable living education center with on site garden, compost and green house
•    Intergenerational learning and sharing opportunities
•    Visions 21, a spiritual school for adults
•    Coffee house/ All ages Music venue

We would like this center to help promote already existing programs and businesses in Eugene and not to take away from them.  This would be a place for people to go and find out what is happening, available jobs, and opportunities to volunteer and get involved.

This building would have solar panels and any other sustainable green energy solutions that would be available.  All of the products used within the building would be non-toxic and environmentally friendly.  All of the furniture and any other supplies needed would be purchased from companies who are sustainable and earth friendly.

This center would also act as a way to connect with different people, places, organizations, businesses, and events happening all over the world with similar focuses.

This is a global movement that is already happening.  This movement is centered in sustainability, the arts, yoga/tai chi/creative movement and alternative medicine, interfaith copperation and respect, non-violent communication and healing among groups and people, local organic food and crafts, creative programs for kids and adults, permaculture, spiritual education, and the creation of peace in our communities.  We believe Eugene is in a great position to join this movement because we have so much available space in the heart of our city and so many people willing to work on the creation of healthy, vibrant, and peaceful downtown.

We are ready to make our city and our downtown vibrant!
